NFB NET is the the official BBS of the National Federation of the Blind. Those familiar with Fidonet will find it at 1:282/1045. This BBS contains a wealth of information for those interested in blindness-related issues. Its other functions make it well worth visiting often. In addition to the modem line (612) 696-1975, users have Telnet access from the Internet. Just point your Telnet client to nfbnet.org with a command like, telnet nfbnet.org or 206.11.202.33 if you like the numbers better. NFB NET features a large repository of useful files. It has Kermit running as an upload/download protocol. This protocol is popular on the Internet. It seems a bit slow, but does work. Some people have reported problems with zmodem uploads when Telneting, but Kermit appears to work. Also, downloading seems to be more robust than uploading, and PPP connections seem more robust then Shell accounts when transfering files, although the latter will work fine. Users can send and receive Internet email from NFB NET. The email area is 90. For complete instructions, download or read the file "emailhow.txt from area 1." On the main menu of NFB NET is the item, o for offline reading. You can find the Bluewave door here. Bluewave is a very popular message reading and replying system, that many blind persons use. Choose b bluewave from the o offline menu and follow the instructions. A growing number of users have had little or no experience with a BBS, having begun and continued their online acivity on the Internet. The user interface on NFB NET might be different from what the visitor has come to expect over the greater net. Help is available however, which should assure that NFB NET is friendly to all users, regardless of prior experience with BBSs.
