Use the following keyboard shortcuts as you work with icons and windows on your desktop. The command keys are located to both sides of the space bar, resembling a Clover. Older machines may have an Apple on this key. Some programs have even more keyboard shortcuts and you can find them either in the menus or the individual programs Help files.

New Folder
hold down Command then press N

Open
hold down Command then press O

Print
hold down Command then press P

Close Window
hold down Command then press W

Get Info
hold down Command then press I

Duplicate
hold down Command then press D

Make Alias
hold down Command then press M

Put Away
hold down Command then press Y

Find
hold down Command then press F

Find Again
hold down Command then press G

Undo
hold down Command then press Z

Copy
hold down Command then press C

Paste
hold down Command then press V

Cut
hold down Command then press X

Eject Disk
hold down Command then press E

Select All
hold down Command then press A

to Open an Icon
hold down Command then press Down Arrow

to Clean Up Selected Icons
hold down Shift then press Clean Up

to Clean Up and Sort Icons
hold down Option then press Clean Up

to Select an Icon by Name
Begin Typing the Name

to Select the Next Icon Alphabetically
press Tab

to Select the Previous Icon Alphabetically
hold down Shift then press Tab

to Select an Icon to the Left or Right (in icon view only)
press Left Arrow or Right Arrow

to Select an Icon to Above or Below (any view)
press Up Arrow or Down Arrow

to Make the Desktop Active
hold down Command and Shift then press Up Arrow

to Close All Windows
hold down Option then press Close

to Display a Pop-Up Menu of the Enclosing Folders and Disk
hold down Command then press the Window Title

to Open the Window that Encloses the Active Window
hold down Command then press Up Arrow

to Close a Window After Opening One of its Icons
hold down Option then press Open

to Expand the Outline of the Selected Folder
hold down Command then press Right Arrow

to Collapse the Outline of the Selected Folder
hold down Command then press Left Arrow

to Expand the Entire Outline of the Selected Folder
hold down Command and Option then press Right Arrow

to Collapse the Entire Outline of the Selected Folder
hold down Command and Option then press Left Arrow

to Take a Snapshot of the Screen (pict format)
hold down Command and Shift then press 3

to Avoid Seeing a Warning Message and to Remove Locked Files
hold down Option then press Empty Trash

to Rebuild the Desktop File on Restart
hold down Command and Option while your computer starts up

to Turn Off All System Extensions on Restart
hold down Shift while your computer starts up
